To date, this program has benefited single women and mothers with needs not addressed by other local agencies, allowing them to reach stability in their own lives and their children's. We have provided over $80,000 in support to date.
Along with the non-profit community, County and City Government, Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses have played a significant role in making Dayton "The New Bass Fishing Capitol in the South!"
History
Through the 2012 County Assessment members of the Rhea community expressed a need for additional programs that were designed to assist women and mothers with children. The United Way Board of Directors created a special GRANT designated to meet those needs.
Concurrently, a handful of women leaders came up with the idea to host a bass tournament calling it Fish the Chick and needed a partner to help get it off the ground. Jenny Nevans, a BASS sponsored lady bass angler and Christine Ralph Executive Director of UW talked, and a partnership was formed with proceeds going to support the GRANT with additional funds. The first committee included Jenny Brooks Nevans, Dr. Lori Reid, Stacey Swafford, Stacey Gates, Kathy Griffin, Sarah Jane Locke and Kim Cranfield.
For consecutive years since its inception the event has grown each year. In 2020, we added an online auction to raise additional funds for this important need. The bottom line, more women and especially our children have received services that better their everyday life. All money stays in our community doing the work its citizens said we needed.
Lake Chickamauga
Lake Chickamauga is a man-made reservoir on the Tennessee River, created by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). It was formed when the Chickamauga Dam was built, with construction beginning in 1936 and the project completed in 1940.
The lake is named after the Chickamauga Cherokee, a group that split from the main Cherokee Nation in the 1700s and lived near North Chickamauga Creek, which flows into the Tennessee River near the dam site.
Chickamauga Lake stretches about 59 miles from Chickamauga Dam upriver to Watts Bar Dam and covers roughly 36,200 acres with around 780-810 miles of shoreline.
